The Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education is situated in Vaasa. It was founded in 1974 and it is responsible for the training of all Swedish-speaking teachers in Finland. The faculty is the oldest part of the Ostrobothnian Unit of Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa. The Vaasa Teacher Training School (primary, secondary and upper secondary levels) is closely linked to the Faculty of Education. The education of kindergarten teachers takes place in the town of Jakobstad (Pietarsaari) in Finnish.

Class teachers, special teachers, kindergarten teachers and subject teachers in Textiles and Technical Sloyd (Sloyd teachers), and from 1999 subject teachers in Domestic Science, pursue all their studies at the faculty. All other subject teachers study their subject(s) elsewhere and enter the faculty when they are ready to do their pedagogical studies and teacher training - a process which usually takes about one academic year.

In addition to the above mentioned categories, vocational teachers receive their pedagogical training at the faculty. Student councellors, among others, are also educated at the faculty.

At the Faculty of Education the following degrees may be obtained: Bachelor of Education, Master of Education, Licentiate in Education and Doctor of Education.

   

THE DEPARTMENT OF TEACHER EDUCATION  

The Department of Teacher Education is the biggest of all departments at Åbo Akademi University. All teachers except special teachers obtain their training here. The students can broadly be classified into two categories viz. those studying for a degree (class teachers, craft teachers etc) and those doing their one-year teacher training (most subject teachers, vocational teachers etc).

Students may choose either education or craft education as their main subject. For their second subject, they can either choose to study any of the subjects taught at school or in another academic subject or multidisciplinary unit. Teaching practice, both guided and unguided, is included in the studies for every student at the department. On average a master´s degree takes 4-5 years to obtain.



THE DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATION

The department has functioned as an independent department since 1992. The Department provides education for all categories of special teachers i.e. primary and secondary school teachers, vocational school teachers, teachers for children with multiple disabilities etc. Students study special education as their main subject and their exam includes studies in education and in various school subjects. The department also offers students who do not plan to become teachers the possibility to study special education. Some of these students apply for jobs related to research, planning and administration in fields related to special education and rehabilitation.
